Our Staff Spotlight for the month of August is our extremely talented Lead Hand, Nathan Nicholson! Nathan has worked at BWS for 18 years and counting. He began his journey with the company as a Finish Off Technician when our facility was much smaller than it is today. Currently, Nathan holds a very important position as Lead Hand in the company’s Beam Station. On a typical day Nathan may have four to eight men working under his supervision on the beam line, which requires intelligence, interpersonal skills, and the ability to organize and direct.
One aspect of Nathan’s position that cannot go without mention is his role determining the dimensions of each trailer’s main webbing. Nathan works closely with BWS’s Engineering Department to provide this preliminary information to our Engineers before they can prepare a trailer for actual fabrication. In addition, he provides the Engineering team with the required beam crown design that is used to determine the load capacity for the unit in question. Nathan’s ability to figure out these dimensions is crucial, as his findings allow our Engineers to make adjustments before a trailer is built to reduce material waste and labor down the production line. Impressively, Nathan has generated vital beam dimensions for over 100 of BWS’s trailer models during his time here.
Like many residents of Carleton County, Nathan enjoys snowmobiling and Jeeping in his spare time. Many employees of BWS comment on Nathan’s capabilities – Randy McDougall, Chief Operations Officer, has this to say of Nathan: “He is just one of those employees who gives his all every day, and for that, I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.”
